HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- A suspect was hospitalized in critical condition after being shot in the head by a police officer Friday afternoon, according to officials.

According to the Houston Police Department, officers responded at about 3:25 p.m. to a robbery-in-progress call at a Family Dollar in the 5100 block of Almeda Road. A male suspect had reportedly stolen items from the store and was threatening employees with a knife as he left.

Officers said they arrived at the scene immediately and spotted the suspect walking eastbound across the Southmore Bridge.

One officer approached from the bridge's east side entrance and ordered the suspect to stop. Police said the suspect began to run but turned back after seeing more officers on the other side. At that point, the suspect allegedly raised a knife at the officers.

An officer fired one shot, striking the suspect.

Officers rendered aid to the man before he was taken to the hospital in critical condition. No officers were injured during the incident.

SkyEye flew over the scene where heavy law enforcement surrounded the area.
